Mini Heart Cakes

Valentine’s Day is the time to show your love and be very extra about it. These sweet little cakes are great way to do it. They’re VERY beginner friendly and they don’t require any cake decorating skills.

Make and Color Batter

Using your favorite vanilla cake recipe, prep the batter then split into 4 separate bowls. I always use a hybrid cake mix recipe and it has never failed me! I’m constantly getting compliments on my cakes and they taste better than from a bakery. Here is the recipe that I LOVE to use: HYBRID CAKE MIX RECIPE

Color 3 of the bowls & leave one uncolored (YouTube tutorial below). Always opt for a gel based food coloring like Wilton Color Right or AmeriColor.

Then, add each color to a piping bag and cut a small hole in the tip. I like to use a tall cup to help me with this process. It makes it a lot less messy!

Begin to pipe lines, diagonally, on to a jelly roll pan. Alternate colors to your preference then bake at 325F for about 15 minutes.

Making the Mini Cakes

Once the cake has cooled, you can begin to cut out the heart shapes using a cookie cutter. You’ll need 3 hearts to make one mini cake.

For these, you can easily use a store-bought canned frosting or a homemade American Buttercream.

You can also choose any piping tip for the filling or you can simply spread the frosting on. If you do choose a tip, I recommend the Wilton 1M tip like I used.

Unless you’re spreading the frosting on, fit a piping bag with your tip then fill with frosting.

Pipe on dollops of frosting to the cake layers until you’ve stacked 3.

Then you can add your Valentine’s themed sprinkles or any toppers you’d like. The greatest thing about these little cakes is that there is no need to stop through out the process to chill the cakes as you would for bigger cakes.
